August 2011 – Arda river valley: village of Arda, village of Mogilitsa, village of Smilyan
Participants: Vera Nikolova, Dobrinka Parusheva

The fieldwork carried out in the Arda river valley aimed at investigation of specific features of the cultural heritage in this part of the Rodopa mountain and identification of some positive practices as far as the tourist interpretation of heritage is concerned.
What characterizes this area is the preserved textile production of typical traditional clothes and accessories as well as wood carving and elaboration of everyday artifacts in wood. There are several local fests that have been running regularly like the transborder kin gatherings in the village of Arda, the Fest of handicrafts in the village of Mogilitsa, etc.
The Arda river valley enjoys live rituals and folklore tradition which exist thanks to the stored and cherished kin and ethnic memory of the local population, the entrepreneurial spirit of the local tourist associations, Tourist information centers and, last but not least, the active role of the municipal authorities, local chitalishte boards and schools.
Unchanged nature attracts the attention of visitors as well as the natural embodiment of the heritage in this unique natural environment.
